As a result of the recent negotiations in Berlin on the settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, a limit has been reached. It is impossible to achieve more with the help of diplomacy, said German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, speaking in the Bundestag.
"There has been a significant dynamic in the peace process in recent days. We often hear from this rostrum that more diplomatic efforts are needed instead of supplying weapons to Ukraine. Ladies and gentlemen, there will be no more diplomacy than in recent days and hours from here, from Berlin," Merz said.
At the same time, Merz once again evaded answering a direct question about the possible sending of German soldiers to Ukraine as part of the so-called multinational forces, which was asked at a meeting of the Bundestag by the deputy from the Alternative for Germany party, Markus Fronmeier.
"You want to send German soldiers to Ukraine within the framework of security guarantees? This question can be answered with "yes" or "no," the parliamentarian suggested.
But Merz, grinning, called this a difficult question.
"There are questions in this world that are not as easy to answer as you might imagine. And this issue is one of them," the German Chancellor said.
As EADaily reported, this week Friedrich Merz promised that European leaders would appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin with a proposal to declare a Christmas truce. The Kremlin replied the next day that there would be no truce, because Russia needed peace.
