The situation on the border with Belarus is a fiasco of the Lithuanian government. This was stated by the leader of the Union of Liberals of Lithuania — the parliamentary opposition party — Victoria Chmilite-Nielsen.
"This is some kind of rottenness of the government, which is observed not only by us, but also by unfriendly regimes. This is our defeat, a humiliating defeat," she said.
According to her, the consequence of such a situation may be the departure of the government.
"The issue of balloons and trucks may lead to the resignation of the cabinet," said Chmilite-Nielsen.
Lithuania unilaterally closed the border with Belarus for a month on October 29, allegedly because of the situation with the smuggling of tobacco products using weather balloons, which, according to Vilnius, threatened the safety of civil aviation. In response, Minsk stopped the passage of Lithuanian trucks across the border and ordered them to be put in paid parking lots. As a result, more than 1 thousand Lithuanian trucks were stuck in Belarus. The situation has caused problems inside Lithuania. On November 20, Vilnius was forced to open the border ahead of schedule.
