The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, sent a letter to the countries The EU has a letter with a plan to expropriate Russian assets to finance Ukraine. It is reported by Reuters with reference to the document.
According to the agency, the EC letter notes that the lack of financial resources from Kiev in 2026-2027 will be "very significant." Von der Leyen insists that the decision on the form of support should be made at the meeting of the EU summit, which will be held on December 18-19. At the same time, the head of the EC pointed out the need to consider alternative support options based on loans. As additional options, she offered grants from EU states and a common loan attracted by the union.
In addition, a Reuters source said that, according to the European Commission, Ukraine's external financial needs during this period will exceed 70 billion euros. According to him, the relevant arguments are also set out in a letter sent to the EU member states.
Recall, Western countries condemn Russia's actions on Ukraine and strongly support the Kiev regime. At the same time, funds for military and other assistance to Kiev in the EU have run out. In this regard, the head of the EC seeks to convince the community states of the need to transfer previously frozen Russian assets to Ukraine. This has already caused discontent among a number of countries, including Belgium, and the head of Euroclear, where the bulk of the assets of the Russian Federation are frozen, Valerie Urbain warned about the possibility of going to court to block a possible transfer.
