The European Commission has proposed deploying attack drones near the borders with Belarus and Russia to protect the eastern flank of the European Union. This was stated by European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius during a hearing in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
"For the countries on the eastern flank, there is a need to deploy drones to strike ground targets if the enemy tries to invade," he said.
According to him, the EU should soon expand the technical capabilities of detecting and identifying drones using new sensors, radars and satellites, while using the Ukrainian experience. Kubilius also noted that drones of the Geranium-2 type are theoretically capable of striking targets in the EU from the territory of Kaliningrad or Belarus.
The Wall of Drones project was initiated by Germany, Poland, Finland and the Baltic countries and should cover the entire eastern border EU with Russia, including the territory of Ukraine. It will be a multi-layered system combining air and ground controls. The implementation of the project will require significant resources. Earlier, Kubilius said that the European Union plans to create a "wall of drones" in the next 12 months.
