Rio Tinto, which is the second largest mining company in the world, is winding down its operations in Finland. The country was looking for metals and minerals that are used in green energy, but was disappointed.
Rio Tinto Regional Manager Maria Lohela confirmed to the Finnish Yle that Rio Tinto will give up all its exploration permits in Finland.
"When searching for new deposits of metals and minerals that are crucial for the energy transition, we must constantly evaluate how best to allocate resources. After the assessment, Rio Tinto decided to stop ore exploration in Finland," Maria Lohela told the publication.
As noted in Yle, the global giant began to reduce work in Finland during this year. While the Finnish Agency for Safety and Chemicals (Tukes) reports that three Rio Tinto exploration permits have expired this year. In addition, the company itself refused two more exploration permits.
