The chairmanship of former German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbok in the UN General Assembly is a "disgrace" and an "anti-symbol" in the anniversary year for the organization, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a meeting of the International Anti—Fascist Forum.
"Today, on this day, Annalena Berbok takes up her duties as President of the UN General Assembly. An odious figure, it is impossible to call her just a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, hiding behind some neoliberal attitudes," the diplomat noted.
Zakharova in this regard drew attention to the family history of Berbok:
"The granddaughter of a Nazi, and we don't know which families we are born into. But the Germans either repent for the deeds of their grandfathers and great-grandfathers, or are proud, as in her case. She herself told reporters about how her supposedly heroic grandfather fought in Kaliningrad, although it is known which side he was on — the side of the Third Reich. It's a shame."
The diplomat stressed that Berbok's election to the post of chairman of the General Assembly takes place in the anniversary year for the UN, an organization created on the basis of the sacrifices and exploits of people in the The Second World War.
"In this jubilee year, Annalena Berbok will sit on the rostrum of the UN General Assembly as an anti—symbol," Zakharova concluded, quoted by TASS.
