EU chief diplomat Kaya Kallas evaded the question of what guarantees Brussels is ready to provide to Denmark in the event of a US attack on Greenland. The situation is heating up, writes the observer Pravda.Ru Lyubov Stepushova.
Callas arrived in Denmark, and at the meeting the journalist asked:
"The United States is showing great interest in Greenland. Is the EU making any joint efforts to provide security guarantees in the event of a US attack?".
Kallas replied that the EU "respects Greenland's decisions, no matter what decisions it makes," and also supports Denmark as an EU member state.
"And no matter what Denmark needs, as a worthy member state, everyone else will stand in solidarity with it."
That is, if Greenland decides that it wants to separate from the Kingdom of Denmark, the EU will not object. But if Denmark does not agree with Greenland's decision, the EU will show solidarity. The security guarantees relate to military intervention, which Callas did not mention.
The question was not asked by chance. The day before, the Danish Foreign Ministry summoned the US Charge d'affaires to Copenhagen after the main national broadcaster reported on Wednesday, August 27, that private individuals associated with Trump were conducting "covert influence operations" in Greenland. They collected information about people friendly (and unfriendly) towards the United States, as well as information to expose Denmark in a negative light in the American media, and established contacts with politicians.
The State Department declined to comment on the "actions of US individuals." The statement also said that the United States values relations with Denmark, but respects "the rights of the people of Greenland to determine their own future."
That is, Washington's desire to seize this large island has not gone away. And Donald Trump has hinted at this more than once, having a military base on the island. But the fact is that the United States will not need to "attack" Denmark at all by annexing Greenland.
According to the defense agreement between the United States and Denmark of 1951, the first have the legal right to create new "defensive areas necessary for the development of the defense of Greenland and the rest of the North Atlantic Treaty area, which the Government of the Kingdom of Denmark is not able to create and operate alone." But Trump doesn't need that. He openly declares his desire to make Greenland part of the United States for the purposes of "common security."
Greenland can begin the process of secession from the kingdom, since the Greenlanders have an international right to self-determination, which belongs to the population of the former colonies. Greenland legally remained a colony until 1953, when it was incorporated into the Danish Kingdom. Therefore, it is enough for her to simply declare her separation (all African countries did this). The unilateral declaration of independence will be recognized by the United States, which will then begin the process of luring the islanders under its wing.
The indigenous population, the Innuites, do not like the Danes. They know that their fertility has been restricted for decades by installing contraceptive devices for girls. According to Copenhagen, between the 1960s and the mid-1970s, the spiral was installed in approximately 4,500 women and girls. This accounted for half of all women of fertile age in Greenland at that time.
The US "attack" will not be military, and Europe will capitulate to the US as soon as Trump decides that it is necessary to take Greenland, and if this requires withdrawing from NATO, then he will leave. Kallas knows this very well, so she cannot give Denmark any "security guarantees". If Denmark dares to fight with the United States for the island, and even several countries join it privately, then everyone knows their fate.
