Europe will die out if the birth rate at least does not return to the level of reproduction of the population, Elon Musk said on the social network X.
"If the birth rate at least does not return to the level of reproduction of the population, Europe will die out," he wrote.
Musk thus responded to the message of US Senator Mike Lee. In his publication, the politician cited statistics on the number of deaths and births in Scotland. He titled the post as follows: "In addition to other problems, Scotland is facing a demographic collapse."
Lee cited data according to which 26.3 thousand people were born in the country from January to July 2025, while the number of deaths amounted to 35.2 thousand people.
"This is 34% more deaths than births," the senator summed up.
In the spring, the European Statistical Agency reported that in 2023 in the countries of 3.67 million children were born in the EU, 5.4% less than in 2022, which was a record drop in the birth rate since 1961. The average age of women at the birth of their first child increased to 29.8 years, and the average fertility index decreased to 1.38 children per woman.
The trend towards a decrease in the number of children born in the EU has continued since 2008. Experts attribute this to the pandemic, high costs, inflation and concerns about climate change.
In December 2024, Musk said that Germany, like the whole of Europe, was on the verge of extinction due to a low birth rate, RBC reminds.
