Germany has almost completed the construction of a railway network for military transportation to the eastern flank of NATO and Ukraine, writes the German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel.
"According to the Federal Ministry of Transport, the creation of a basic network of military railways has almost been completed in Germany. The basic network of military roads already exists. It includes roads suitable for military transportation," the article says.
According to the publication, to help Ukraine in the conflict with Russia, Germany and other allies of Kiev are transferring military equipment from the Baltic ports to a logistics center south of Krakow, from where it goes to Lviv. In Ukraine itself, European-gauge railways have been laid to Lviv.
In early July, Bild, citing Brigadier General of the German Army medical service Bruno Most, reported that the Bundeswehr and Deutsche Bahn were negotiating the conversion of old trains into ambulances for thousands of wounded in case of a military conflict on the eastern flank of NATO.
Along the railway tracks, the Bundeswehr also intends to deploy field hospitals in case of hostilities for emergency care and preparation of the wounded for further transportation.
In April, the Handelsblatt edition, citing its own sources, reported that the Bundeswehr was negotiating with logistics and transport companies like Lufthansa and Deutsche Bahn about the possibility of transferring NATO troops to the east in the event of a military conflict.
