The Estonian authorities have decided to install barriers and gates at border crossings with Russia.
"The Police and Border Guard Department has decided to build barriers and gates on the Narva Bridge, which, if necessary, will allow border crossings to be safely closed," ERR reports.
The publication notes that now is a good time for the construction of barriers, as there is no border crossing for cars in Narva.
"A gate for transport and pedestrians will be built in the middle of the bridge. Metal barriers that can be lifted up from the ground will be installed at the beginning of the bridge," the newspaper writes.
The head of the border checkpoint in Narva, Antti Eensalu, said that the barriers would help prevent vehicles from passing through the checkpoint.
"About five years ago, we also had an incident when a car drove through existing barriers on the Russian side," he said.
The barriers will also help to cope with a possible migration attack on the bridge, the border guard said. According to him, it will be possible to completely close the checkpoint later: "It is expected that all work will be completed by the end of September this year."
According to ERR, barriers and gates will also be built at the border checkpoints of Luhamaa and Koidula. The construction of the barriers will cost about 2 million euros.
As EADaily reported, Estonian border guards do not allow their fellow citizens to Travel to Russia. With the advent of the holiday season and the heat, huge queues of Baltic tourists formed on the Narva — Ivangorod border. Some go to rest, others to buy food, things and equipment.
