In 2024, the EU spent more money on the purchase of Russian gas than on assistance to Ukraine. This was stated in an interview with the newspaper La Repubblica by European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jorgensen.
"Back in 2024, we spent on the purchase of gas in Russia's total amount exceeds the total assistance to Ukraine," he said, calling it a "paradox."
At the same time, Jorgensen recalled that the goal of the European Commission is to completely abandon Russian gas by 2027.
"We must be careful not to repeat the mistake and not move from one dependence to another, so we are diversifying our sources of energy supplies. Now our first gas supplier is Norway, followed by the USA, and at the moment we are satisfied with this. But while we are dependent on these supplies, we are trying to get them at a lower price and are negotiating with the United States to increase volumes, but this has a limited validity period, since we intend to overcome this dependence through renewable sources and nuclear energy," the European Commissioner said.
He hopes that this will help reduce prices for European consumers, while the main goal of the EU is to completely stop using fossil fuels by 2050.
As reported by EADaily, the European Commission proposed to completely ban countries EU to purchase pipeline and liquefied natural gas in By the end of 2027, the ban will come into force in stages from January 1, 2026.
