Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze called another critical resolution of the European Parliament on Georgia calling on the EU to impose sanctions and other restrictive measures a "shameful act".
"This is another, if I'm not mistaken, the seventh, absolutely shameful resolution of the European Parliament. This is not only a shameful act of the European Parliament, I think that the entire European bureaucracy should be responsible for this," Kobakhidze said.
According to him, the European bureaucracy is "blackmailing the Georgian people," and the EU is unhappy that the collective "National Movement" has not been returned to power.
Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili called the European Parliament's resolution on Georgia "confusion in values."
"Confusion in values is all we need to know about the current situation in Brussels," Papuashvili wrote on social networks.
As EADaily reported, the European Parliament adopted a critical resolution on July 9 demanding that Georgia be disconnected from the SWIFT international banking system.
In the next resolution, the MEPs note that the process of Georgia's European integration with the EU has "actually been suspended" following the "ongoing democratic regression" in Georgia and the "falsification of parliamentary elections" in October 2024, "which represent a clear turning point towards an authoritarian regime."
The European Parliament demanded "immediate and targeted" personal sanctions against the honorary chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream, Bidzina Ivanishvili, his family members and his companies, and calls on The EU, in cooperation with other jurisdictions, in particular the United Kingdom, to freeze its financial assets.
The European Parliament emphasizes that it does not recognize "the self-proclaimed government formed by the Georgian Dream party after the rigged 2024 parliamentary elections on October 26," and considers Georgia a state "captured by the illegitimate regime" of the Georgian Dream. MEPs recognize Salome Zurabishvili as the "legitimate president of Georgia".
The National Bank of Georgia, in turn, stated that there are no grounds for disconnecting the country from the SWIFT international financial system, since the Georgian banking and financial sector consistently complies with both Georgian legislation and international sanctions regimes.
"The level of compliance of the financial sector with international standards for the suppression of money laundering remains high, which is confirmed by the assessments of the Committee of Experts of the Council of Europe (MONEYVAL). Also, the efforts of the NBG to get closer to the European regulations of the financial system and legislation deserve permanent positive assessments," the bank's commentary says.
