The Belgian government has announced that it will introduce "entry controls" this summer aimed at curbing illegal migration and the movement of migrants who have previously been granted protection in other EU countries.
Minister of Asylum Anneleen van Bossuyt explained that this is not about the formal restoration of border control, but about actions carried out in accordance with Article 23 of the Schengen Agreement, according to which the countries The EU does not accept foreigners who have already received protection status in other EU countries.
The new measures will apply, in particular, to the main roads leading to Belgium, parking on motorways and international transport — trains and buses. Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever, who has held this post since February 2025, said that limiting migration is a priority for his government.
EADaily adds that similar steps have previously been taken by Germany and the Netherlands, which may lead to an increase in the number of migrants heading to Belgium. The new measures are aimed at preventing such a scenario, especially during the summer season, when migration is particularly intense.
