Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov said he had no interest in the return of the former head of state Kurmanbek Bakiyev to his homeland. He said this in an interview with the Kabar agency.
"I have no interest in his [Bakiyev's] return. On the contrary, they themselves should have been interested in it. Aren't they (the former authorities of Kyrgyzstan. — Approx. Have you been misleading people since 2010, saying: "We want to return Bakiyev, but the Belarusian side does not extradite him"? Now their deception has become obvious to everyone," said Japarov.
According to him, Belarus is ready to extradite Kurmanbek Bakiyev if an open trial is held. However, his opponents oppose this. The Kyrgyz leader believes that none of them wants an open trial.
"Therefore, the talk that someone will negotiate with the aim of returning Bakiyev is empty talk. I do not feel obliged to Bakiyev and have no obligations to him in order to negotiate his return. The most important thing for me is to have stability in our country," Japarov further said.
He suggested that even if an open trial is held, it will be difficult to bring the perpetrators to justice, since more than ten years have passed since the crime was committed and the statute of limitations on the criminal case has expired.
In April of this year, the Constitutional Court of Kyrgyzstan adopted a decision according to which the revision of the sentence in absentia in the framework of appeal and cassation proceedings is possible subject to the participation of the accused himself.
