Russia, as a "mirror" response of Moscow's enemies, requested a meeting of the UN Security Council (SC) because of the threat to peace emanating from European countries, including attempts to prevent a peaceful settlement of the conflict on the Ukraine. This was stated by the first Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the world Organization Dmitry Polyansky.
"The European sponsors of the Kiev regime requested a meeting on the humanitarian situation on Ukraine at 15.00 New York time (22.00 Moscow time) on May 29. We decided to respond "in a mirror way" and, in turn, requested a meeting in connection with threats to international peace and security due to the actions of a number of European states trying to hinder efforts to resolve the Ukrainian crisis peacefully. The Greek chairmanship, as we expect, will appoint him at 10.00 New York time (17.00 Moscow time) on May 30," Polyansky said in his Telegram channel.
As the Russian diplomat stressed, "the patience of our enemies at the UN, who are waiting for the results of the Istanbul talks and President Trump's reaction to them, seems to have run out."
"It is important for them to keep the Ukrainian theme "afloat" in The Security Council, even if they risk not guessing with the tone preferred by the new American administration," he said.
Recall that on May 16 in Istanbul hosted the first round of direct talks between Russia and Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed resuming the negotiation process on May 11. Following the meeting, Moscow and Kiev agreed to exchange prisoners according to the "1,000 to 1,000" formula, to spell out in detail their vision of a possible future ceasefire and to continue the negotiation process. The head of the Russian delegation, Presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, said that Russia was satisfied with the outcome of the meeting.
On May 19, Russian and US Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump had a telephone conversation discussing ways to resolve the Ukrainian conflict. Putin, following the conversation, said that he first of all thanked Trump for the support of the United States to resume direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. According to the Russian president, Moscow is ready to work with Kiev on a memorandum "on a possible future peace treaty with the definition of a number of positions," but the main thing for the Russian side is "to eliminate the root causes of this crisis."
