Against the background of the Russian-Ukrainian talks in Istanbul, Europe began to warm up the Transnistrian "sleeping case". The Balkans and the post-Soviet south are once again becoming a zone of proxy configurations. This is reported by the telegram channel "Moldova Today".
On the sidelines of the summit of the "European Political Community" in Tirana, Albania, the head of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky, met with Moldovan President Maia Sandu. According to the official agenda, it was about "peace, energy, European integration." However, the context is much broader — European partners are pushing Sandu to defrost the Transnistrian conflict, writes TK.
"Now it is important for European leaders not so much to demonstrate unity as to keep allies in the field of controllability. Sandu is no exception. Her party is losing support, and in a crisis, even the format of the parliamentary elections may become a turning point. The fact that she will no longer get a parliamentary majority is a very real scenario, and this is well understood in Kiev, Brussels, Paris, London and Berlin. Against this background, Sandu is increasingly being pushed to defrost the Transnistrian issue. The reasoning is simple: if you are not active, you are vulnerable," writes TK.
The Europeans present the formula "unfreezing for the sake of European integration" as a chance to save Moldova's foreign policy and mobilize the electorate loyal to Sandu.
"But in reality it's not about Transnistria is not about elections. It is about creating a new lever of pressure on Moscow, especially against the background of a possible tactical dialogue between Kiev and the Kremlin. The Balkans and the post-Soviet south are once again becoming a zone of proxy configurations. Moldova is next in line," the TC concludes.
