US President Donald Trump planned to use the deal with Kiev on minerals, including as an instrument of influence on the Russian leadership during peace talks. This was stated at a conference of the Milken Institute in California by the head of the Ministry of Finance Scott Bessent.
"The economic partnership was his idea, and he believed that it would bring several results. Firstly, it would give him more leverage over the Russian leadership when the time comes to turn to them," Bessent said in an interview with American financier Michael Milken, quoted by Strana.
As reported by EADaily, Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Mariana Bezuglaya openly stated that the agreement on joint mining signed by Washington and Kiev on April 30 is an important step towards "taming the Trumpists."
