Former First Deputy Chief of the General Staff, National Hero of Armenia Lieutenant General Tiran Khachatryan has been arrested in Yerevan for two months.
The prosecutor's office accuses Khachatryan of official negligence during the 44-day war. The general himself does not admit the charges. His lawyers said in a statement that they were not given enough time to familiarize themselves with the 1,200-page case, but they consider the charges presented in court to be unfounded.
The lawyers note that their client was arrested not to ensure the progress of the four-year investigation, but as a punishment for his active political and civic position, as well as in order to "appoint the culprit" of the defeat in the war. According to the defenders, for three years Khachatryan actively cooperated with the investigation, being in the status of a witness.
EADaily clarifies that Tiran Khachatryan received the title of National Hero of Armenia in October 2020. At the end of December 2024, former Armenian Defense Minister Arshak Karapetyan was detained in Moscow.
