A court in the Uzbek city of Andijan sentenced a 39-year-old citizen of Uzbekistan to 4 years in prison for participating in hostilities on the territory of Ukraine on the side of Russia.

According to the indictment, which is quoted by the newspaper "Gazeta.Uz", in the spring of 2023, a man, along with his sister and wife, went to Moscow for seasonal work. At first he worked as a butcher in the Sarok store, and then got a job at the Novatek oil exchange. There he met a Russian citizen who offered him to join the ranks of the Russian Armed Forces "in exchange for a high monthly salary." At the trial, the foreigner explained his actions by the difficult financial situation and the fact that he is the only breadwinner of the family.

According to the publication, until December 2024, he participated in hostilities conducted by Russian forces in the Ukrainian cities of Shakhtersk and Bakhmut. On December 31, 2023, the man returned to Uzbekistan and voluntarily turned himself in to law enforcement agencies. At the trial, the soldier said that during his business trip he had eliminated more than 10 Ukrainian militants.

"Judge O tabek Mamajonov took into account mitigating circumstances (full confession of guilt, remorse, no criminal record, marital status and the presence of three children) and sentenced him to imprisonment for a term of 4 years and 2 months. The convicted person is prohibited from leaving the place of residence, except for the time necessary for work or study, as well as for traveling to the place of work or study and returning home. Also, he cannot change his place of residence and leave the territory of the Andijan region without the consent of the supervisory authority," Gazeta.Uz clarifies.
