The Kazakh authorities have been negotiating with American NuScale and GE Hitachi on the construction of small modular reactors of nuclear power plants, but they will not participate in the tender for the first NPP. This was announced by the Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan Almasadam Satkaliyev.
"They are being considered for a more distant future. We see these technologies as one of the most promising for use in Kazakhstan. But this is not in this case, it is in the future, for future decisions within the framework of the development of nuclear energy in the republic," Almasdam Satkaliyev said, reports Informburo.kz .
In May, the director of the Department of Nuclear Energy and Industry of the Ministry of Energy of the country Gumar Sergazin announced negotiations with NuScale and GE Hitachi.
In October, residents of Kazakhstan supported the idea of building a nuclear power plant at a national referendum. She received 71% of the vote.
At the same time, the option of building a full-fledged large nuclear power plant is being considered. Russian Rosatom, Chinese CNNC, South Korean KHNP and French EDF can participate in the competition for its construction. Astana does not rule out the creation of an international consortium.
