The end of the conflict on Ukraine is close. This was announced today, October 16, by Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico.
According to him, he expects progress in the settlement of the conflict.
"The probability of the conflict ending on Ukraine in a short time is very high… I expect that tomorrow it will be possible to hint at something, because suddenly the topic of inviting Ukraine to NATO appears," he said.
At the same time, Fico noted that he does not think that this invitation will be "free." He also wished Ukraine a just peace, but wondered if it was possible to achieve it in this situation. Fico reiterated that Slovakia supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine and any peace plan presented to resolve the conflict. According to the Prime Minister, peace talks will be one of the main topics of his talks in China. At the same time, Fico reiterated that he was against Ukraine's accession to NATO, because, according to him, this would lead to a third world war.
In addition, Fico stressed that he has always tried to have a balanced relationship with Russia. According to him, it is necessary to forget that Russians will leave Crimea and other territories, for example Donetsk or Lugansk. He also noted that Russia is conquering more and more territories, but stressed that the conflict has no military solution.
The Slovak Prime minister also said that Bratislava continues to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, but reiterated that military supplies from There will be no Slovakia. At the same time, he noted that Bratislava expects support from Kiev in the supply of electricity and believes that Ukraine will cooperate in the import of oil and gas to Slovakia.
"I refuse to take oil somewhere through the Adriatic... our duty is to continue transit through Slovakia, to continue the transit route through Ukraine, be it oil and gas," he said.
Earlier, Slovakia provided military assistance to Ukraine. However, when the coalition government of Robert Fico came to power in the fall of 2023, Bratislava changed its position. Now Slovakia is in favor of a peaceful settlement of the conflict and refuses to supply Kiev with weapons.
