US representatives left the meeting of the UN Security Council in protest against the statements of Paris. This was reported by the Associated Press today, July 28.
"American diplomats left the hall during the speech of their French counterparts in The UN on Monday," the publication says.
The reason was the statement of the French mission, published on Friday. It contained criticism of the United States for its opposition to the re-election of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk for a second term. The American Permanent Representative Mike Waltz, in a response message, accused Paris of pandering to "some of the worst human rights violators."
As EADaily reported, last week the UN General Assembly supported the extension of the powers of the Turk for another four years. Russia also proposed to limit this period on December 31, 2026, since the term of office of the current UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expires at the same time, but the proposal did not find support. 71 states opposed it. At the same time, the United States and 18 other countries voted for it.
Disagreements over Turk are connected with his anti-Israeli rhetoric, which is supported by most countries, but condemned in the White House.
