The decision of 13-year-old figure skater Alexander Plushenko to play for the Azerbaijani national team caused a resonance in the Russian parliament. The first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Sports Dmitry Svishchev harshly criticized this step, calling it unacceptable. The deputy shared his emotions in an interview with Match TV.
Svishchev stated that he had no excuses for such an act, and demanded that the father of the athlete, the famous figure skater Yevgeny Plushenko, publicly explain the motives for such a choice. It is noteworthy that Evgeny himself has repeatedly spoken out against the change of citizenship by Russian athletes, which adds a double meaning to the situation.
Meanwhile, opinions were divided in the professional environment. Famous coach Alexander Zhulin, on the contrary, supported the young figure skater, saying that there was nothing wrong with the transition. Recall that information about the change of sports citizenship appeared on May 21. Alexander Plushenko will represent Azerbaijan in the international arena, not Russia.
