NATO will create a structure for the defense of Latvia and Estonia in case of conflict with Russia. It is reported by the radio station RMF24 with reference to Reuters.

It is noted that now NATO forces in the Baltic States and northern Poland are under one multinational command, which is based in Szczecin. The planned changes envisage the creation of a second corps, which will quickly and massively "strengthen the defense of the region."

"As the military emphasizes, this is extremely important because of the limited strategic depth and vulnerability of the Baltic countries to a possible attack. In a fully combat-ready army corps, there are usually three divisions, that is, from 40 thousand to 60 thousand soldiers. In peacetime, it functions as the main command structure, ready to quickly deploy forces if necessary," the radio explains.

According to Reuters sources, Germany and the Netherlands, in cooperation with NATO, have agreed that the German-Dutch corps based in Munster, will be retargeted for the defense of Latvia and Estonia.

It is not yet known when this decision will take effect and how many soldiers will be under the new command in the event of a conflict.

"NATO's decision was announced the day after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law significantly expanding his authority to use the army outside the country. The new law allows the Kremlin to send troops abroad to "protect Russian citizens" in the event of their detention, arrest or prosecution by foreign or international courts that "operate without the participation of the Russian Federation," RMF24 notes.

As reported by EADaily, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on the use of The Russian Armed Forces to protect the country's citizens abroad.
