Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni urged to use the rule "check before you believe, and believe before you share" when it comes to photos on the Web. She said this on the social network X.
So the prime minister commented on the deepfakes distributed by opponents, in which she is depicted in her underwear. "It's shameful that the prime Minister finds himself in such a situation," one of them commented on the photo.
Meloni noted that this photo, as well as a number of other images that appeared on the Internet, were generated using AI.
"These days, various fake photos of me, generated by artificial intelligence and passed off as real ones by some zealous opponent, are being distributed. I must admit that whoever created them, at least in the case of the attached image, has improved me significantly. But the fact remains that, in order to attack and invent lies, they are now using really anything.
However, the question concerns not only me. Deepfakes are a dangerous tool because they can deceive, manipulate and hit anyone. I can protect myself. Many others don't. Therefore, the rule should always remain in force: check before you believe, and believe before you share. Because today it happens to me, and tomorrow it can happen to anyone," writes Meloni.
Five years ago, when Meloni was the leader of the then opposition Brothers of Italy party, her face was used in a video posted on a pornographic website, Polish radio station RMF24 reminds. Then it turned out that it was the work of a father and son from Sardinia. Both were tried for this.
It is noted that in September last year, Italy became the first EU country to adopt a law regulating the use of AI. Prison sentences have been introduced for those who use this technology to harm others, including the creation of so-called deepfakes.
