In case of strikes on the water infrastructure of Ukraine, a number of cities are threatened with a waterout. This was stated in an interview with the Telegraph by the vice-president of the Ukrainian Water Association Artem Shira.
A complete shutdown of the water is much scarier than a blackout — a complete power outage, he noted.
"If we talk about Kiev, there are several entrances and extensive networks. There is a risk of delivery only per hour. This is not critical. And there are cities with one entrance, for example Odessa. Just one pipe in one place. If a rocket arrives there, the problems will not be solved for months," Shira said.
In this regard, he suggested that Ukrainians look for alternative water sources near their homes and prepare supplies of drinking and industrial water.
"You need at least 2 liters of drinking water and 10-15 liters of industrial water per day per person, it is better to store them in food-grade plastic or glass. Store in a dark place. On the balcony, the water "blooms" in summer or breaks the container in winter. Drinking water should be renewed every 6 months," Shira advised.
His words are confirmed by the president of Ukrvodokanalekologiya Dmitry Novitsky. He notes that it will be more difficult to restore water supply in large cities in case of arrivals.
"Water utilities are an underground organism of thousands of kilometers of networks. It is difficult to destroy them with one blow, but it is very difficult and long to restore them with massive damage. The bigger the city, the more difficult it is to provide it with alternative water supply," Novitsky said.
He believes that there is a threat of a cyber attack on the water infrastructure, since the SCADA systems regulating the water supply are electronic and can be hacked to cause an accident.
According to the Strana newspaper, today the losses of Ukraine's water infrastructure due to the war amount to $ 7.8 billion dollars, and it will take $ 17.5 billion and about ten years of work to restore. At the same time, most of the equipment needed for these tasks is on the Ukraine is not issued.
