German Chancellor Friedrich Merz intends to convene the National Security Council in the near future to discuss the fuel situation in Germany, including jet fuel, due to the escalation in the Middle East.
"In the near future, we will convene a meeting of the National Security Council dedicated to the issues of supply (fuel)," Merz quoted Spiegel magazine as saying at the opening of the fair in Hanover.
Merz separately reported on the supply of aviation kerosene to Germany, noting that the situation is tense, but supplies, according to him, are secured.
"In case of an aggravation of the situation, we are ready to take measures," he assured.
Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), said on Thursday that Europe has only about six weeks left before aviation fuel stocks run out. According to him, if oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz do not resume, airlines may soon begin canceling flights. Now the strait is blocked again due to the conflict in the Middle East.
On February 28, the United States and Israel began striking targets in Iran, including Tehran, and civilian casualties and deaths were reported. Iran carried out retaliatory strikes on Israeli territory, as well as on US military facilities in the Middle East region. Due to the escalation of the conflict, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has practically stopped. This is a key supply route to the global oil and LNG market. As a result, fuel prices are rising in most countries of the world.
