New types of nuclear weapons should be discussed with Russia. This was stated by US Deputy Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Thomas Dinanno, speaking at a hearing in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US Senate.
According to Dinanno, the "exotic systems" of Russian nuclear weapons are of concern. These are, in particular, the Burevestnik cruise missile and the Poseidon underwater vehicle.
"All these systems are not covered by the New START Treaty. We need to have a direct conversation with the Russians. And I am sure that we will hold it," said the Deputy Foreign Minister.
Dinanno is confident that such topics "will emerge in the interaction within the framework of the permanent five of the UN Security Council, which is coming." Dinanno did not explain what kind of planned contacts he was talking about.
As reported by EADaily, the "New Start Treaty" in the United States is called the Treaty on Measures to Further Reduce and Limit Strategic Offensive Arms with Russia, signed in 2010. The contract expired on February 5. At the same time, the United States refused to accept Russia's proposal to keep its main restrictions in force for a year. Moscow stated that the parties are no longer bound by any obligations and symmetrical declarations in the context of the treaty.
