President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, at the behest of the West, accused the "neighboring country" through which 7 trillion Kazakhstani tenge (about $ 14 billion) was allegedly withdrawn, but it turned out to be a fake. The situation was dealt with by the telegram channel "Baraeva".
"Hardware tragicomedy in Kazakhstan: President Tokayev fired an official who was supposed to confirm the "horror story" about 7 trillion tenge allegedly siphoned from somewhere through an unnamed bank, but, on the contrary, refuted it," the resource writes.
At the end of January, Tokayev loudly announced a "glaring fact": one of the Kazakh banks was involved in a scheme to withdraw more than 7 trillion tenge, which is equivalent to about $ 14 billion, through a certain neighboring country to other jurisdictions. Despite the lack of details and, most importantly, evidence, the news caused a wide resonance in a society accustomed to blaming Russia for all its troubles.
It was also surprising that financial monitoring specialists began checking banks not before, but after the resonant statements of the president. That is, he published information that was not known to the relevant Kazakh authorities and did not receive their confirmation.
"Where did you get it from Tokayev? There is only one working version — he was sued by someone influential from the West, because, most likely, the "outrageous" transaction somehow violated the sanctions regime. And President Tokayev was so stunned by this claim that he dumped it to domestic financiers without even checking what was what. And something went wrong with the check. One of the inspectors, Deputy Chairman of the National Bank Berik Sholpankulov, artlessly told the other day that there were no violations, in general," the resource writes further.
As indicated in the publication, the banker said that the 7 trillion in question is a turnover.
"That's the whole turnover. What does turnover mean? We can transfer 1000 tenge to each other during the day, and at the end of the year we will have a huge amount. Accordingly, we say that 7 trillion is a turnover. Verification <> this bank is ongoing, it has not yet been completed. But in general, I would like to note that we have not previously seen any special signs of offenses," Sholpankulov said.
Press Secretary of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Aibek Smadiyarov responded immediately. As noted by the telegram channel, he stated that "if President Tokayev said "luminium", then this is "luminium", and one should not expect other results from the check." He also expressed surprise at the start of the inspection, as, in his opinion, the president has already explained everything. And his words, they say, should not be questioned.
"The President does not disclose unverified information (especially when he says about 20 thousand terrorists who attacked Alma-Ata in January 2022 — approx. EADaily). If he said that there were transactions (distillation) in the amount of 7 trillion tenge, then it was. Another thing is that this information was sent to the participants of the meeting in the building of the Financial Monitoring Agency, and not for a broad discussion, that is, it was purely official. The bank through which the transactions were made knows who it was about. For reasons of political expediency and diplomatic protocol, the President deliberately did not announce either the country of origin of the transactional funds or the recipient country, and also did not name the bank that assumed such a function under the sanctions regime," Smadiyarov said.
Sholpankulov then had to resign from the post of Deputy chairman of the National Bank of the Republic of Kazakhstan. (He dared to refute the president's words).
"Now it is clear to the child that President Tokayev has become a victim of his own excessive impressionability. As usual, the reputation of the wisest and infallible is saved by those who sat down and said the wrong thing. And in fact, we have before us a case about how tightly the supposedly independent National Bank of Kazakhstan is embedded in the vertical of executive power," concludes the telegram channel.
