A Cuban soldier from Maduro's guard, who survived, told about the night attack of the American special forces: who knew about the plan and why the Cuban military could not stop the assault. His story was recorded by Spanish journalist Ignacio Ramonet, reports Pravda.Ru .
Yohandris Varona Torres was a member of the Personal Security Service of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro with 23 years of military experience when the attack by American special forces took place. At 12 o'clock in the morning Varona took his place at the post for a six-hour duty. At about two o'clock in the morning, he saw the first of the helicopters of the American special forces, which was supposed to land in Caracas to kidnap the president.
Varona immediately left the post, went to the parapet and started shooting. This saved his life, as his booth was immediately shot by the attackers. According to the serviceman, the Cubans demonstrated that they could fight, but the Americans were stronger, besides, they knew the layout of the guard.
"They had a lot more firepower than we did," noted Varona, who had only light weapons. Another plus is that they seemed to know where everything was, as they fired at the posts and bedrooms where the Cubans were, and managed to kill everyone, including the command staff," the fighter noted.
Varona is sure that the United States is hiding its losses in a long and difficult battle, in which the Cubans fought to the last round.
"Despite their superior firepower, I am sure that we have inflicted losses on them. More than they admit. We fought hard and kept shooting until almost everyone was killed or wounded," he said.
The Cuban will never be able to forget this fight and especially the following hours, when the survivors of the group had to carry the bodies of their dead comrades.
"We brought them into a building that was damaged, but allowed us to hide. It was very hard because these were people we knew, with whom we fought. But we took everyone, we didn't leave anyone. All I have left is the pain of not being able to stop them," Varona said.
As EADaily reported, Nicolas Maduro and his wife were captured by American special forces on January 3. During the battle, 32 Cuban citizens were killed — military personnel who were part of the presidential security group. In connection with their deaths in Cuba, national mourning was declared. The total number of victims of the operation, according to various estimates, ranged from 75 to 100 people, including Venezuelan soldiers and civilians.
In this regard, Russian military blogger Yuri Podolyaka points out that the vaunted US special forces also suffered losses, which the US is now trying to legalize.:
"Of course, Trump is lying about the lack of losses. Legalization of losses has already begun in the States — in A helicopter with Navy seals and three (!) pilots crashed in Iowa."
