US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Congress that the administration's recent threats against Greenland do not mean an imminent invasion, and the goal is to buy the island from Denmark, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing sources familiar with the discussion.

After returning to the White House in January 2025, American President Donald Trump has repeatedly announced his intention to annex Greenland to the United States. On January 4, against the background of the American operation in In an interview with The Atlantic, he told Venezuela that the island was "surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships" and was "absolutely necessary" for the United States to defend itself.

Earlier, the Economist wrote that the US presidential administration is preparing to offer Greenland an agreement, which the Republican himself compared to a major real estate deal. We are talking about a Free Association Agreement (Compacts of Free Association, COFA). Washington has similar agreements with small states in the Pacific Ocean.

According to the document, these states grant the US military the right of exclusive access to their territorial waters and airspace, which deprives other countries of such a right. In exchange, the United States provides economic and financial assistance.

The day before, Politico, citing sources, reported that the United States may try to establish control over Greenland in the coming months, timed to coincide with the midterm elections in November or the 250th anniversary of US independence on July 4.

Greenland is a former Danish colony, but remains part of the kingdom, which continues to control its foreign policy and security.

It is the largest island in the world — 2.166 million square kilometers, of which almost 80% is covered with ice, in the northeast of North America. The population is a little more than 50 thousand inhabitants, mostly Inuit (Eskimos), reminds RBC.
