Trump's attack on Venezuela is illegal and unwise — NYT

US President Donald Trump's attack on Venezuela is illegal and unreasonable. It is reported by The New York Times.

"On Saturday, Trump dramatically stepped up his campaign by seizing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro… Few people will sympathize with Maduro… However, if there is a major lesson of American foreign policy over the past century, it is that an attempt to overthrow even the most disgusting regime can aggravate the situation. In 20 years, the United States has failed to create a stable government in Afghanistan and replaced the dictatorship in Libya with a fractured state. The tragic consequences of the 2003 Iraq war continue to haunt America and the Middle East. Perhaps most importantly, the United States has periodically destabilized Latin American countries, including Chile, Cuba, Guatemala and Nicaragua, trying to overthrow the government by force,"the publication says.

According to the publication, Trump is pushing the United States into an international crisis for no good reason.

"The Constitution clearly defines what he must do: apply to Congress. Without Congressional approval, his actions violate US law," the newspaper emphasizes.

The authors of the article call absurd claims that the attack on Venezuela is associated with the flow of drugs to the United States, since this country is not a significant producer of fentanyl or other drugs that have caused the recent epidemic of overdoses in the States, and the cocaine it produces mainly goes to Europe. A more plausible explanation for the attack on Venezuela, according to the authors of the article, can be found in the new National Security Strategy, which refers to the right of the United States to dominate Latin America.

"Venezuela has apparently become the first country to be subjected to this modern imperialism, and this represents a dangerous and illegal approach to America's place in the world," the newspaper notes.
