Detention in Belgium of the former High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy (2014-2019) Federica Mogherini's fraud case shocked the EU diplomatic service. This was reported by the French newspaper Le Monde.
According to the newspaper, former President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy said that he found out about the incident only a few hours later. The former head of the European Diplomacy, Josep Borrel, and the European Commission headed by Ursula von der Leyen declined to comment on this investigation.
Rompuy himself was sharply criticized in 2020 because of the candidacy of Mogherini, who came to the post without managerial or academic experience.
EADaily reminds that on the eve it became known about the detention of the former head of EU diplomacy Mogherini. According to the Belgian publication Le Soir, the investigation is related to possible fraud in the conclusion of government contracts, corruption, conflicts of interest and violation of professional secrecy at the College of Europe in Bruges, where Mogherini has been rector since 2020. According to Le Soir, we are talking about alleged fraud in financing a nine-month training program for diplomats. The Euractiv publication, also citing sources, adds that the case is related to a tender for the purchase of a building for € 3.2 million for student accommodation.
