Spain has sharply criticized NATO's policy

The European Union should be a guarantor of international law, and not follow the path of militarization, as NATO requires. This was stated by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

According to him, it is necessary to work so that by 2035 Europe would not be "armed to the teeth", but would become a guarantor of international law.

"What kind of world do we want to leave our youth when they reach our age? A world in which European countries allocate 5% of their defense budgets?" — Sanchez asked a rhetorical question.

At the same time, he admitted that one should not be naive, given the changing geopolitical realities. Now Spain is still forced to increase defense and security spending.

"The opposition criticizes me for fulfilling a commitment that I did not take — the 2014 agreement on spending at the level of 2% of GDP. But I have fulfilled this obligation," he said.

When asked about his relationship with US President Donald Trump, the Spanish prime minister noted that, despite "ideological and political differences," he wants Spain and the United States to have "the best relations from an institutional, economic and social point of view."

Recall that at present, the North Atlantic Alliance, at the request of the United States, has committed itself to raising military spending to 5% of the The GDP of its participants. At the same time, in many European countries, these decisions of the NATO leadership caused serious discontent.
