Vilnius will again appeal to the authorities of Belarus with a request to release Lithuanian trucks from the republic after the border was unilaterally closed by Lithuania on October 29. This was announced today, November 10, by the chairman of the national Crisis Management Center Vilmantas Vitkauskas.
"It was decided to re—apply to Belarus at the level of high authorities — at the level of border commissioners - with a request to open two checkpoints for an evacuation corridor in both directions," he said.
As EADaily reported, on October 29, Lithuania, citing the need to combat cigarette smuggling, closed the border with Belarus. As a result, several thousand Lithuanian trucks were stuck in the neighboring country. This was followed by an appeal to the leadership of the republic to release Lithuanian trucks, however, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said that Lithuania had sent an appeal to the Lida border detachment — not to a state body, not to the Foreign Ministry, not to the government — "either with a request or with a demand" to open the border.
