Due to the rejection of Russian gas and switching to other suppliers, the bills of German residents for heating their homes have increased significantly. This is evidenced by static data.
In Germany, the heating fee is usually included in the rent in the form of a monthly estimate, which is adjusted at the end of the year. At the same time, according to Eurostat, 13% of German households spend more than 40% of their income on housing, which is five points higher than the European average and second only to Denmark.
The Association of Real Estate Managers predicts that in 2025 gas heating of an apartment of 70 square meters will cost 1,180 euros per year, which is 15% more than in 2024. According to Techem, which analyzed data from 100,000 residential buildings, heating costs have reached record levels over the past four years, with a cumulative increase of 82% compared to 2021. The reason for this situation lies in Germany's rejection of Russian gas and purchases from alternative suppliers.
Until 2022, Russia provided 55% of gas imports to Germany. Now Norway has become the main supplier, which provided 48% of German gas in 2024, followed by the Netherlands (25%) and Belgium (18%). This transition has become more expensive both because of new supply routes and because most of the gas is now supplied in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG). At the same time, the majority of German households are still heated by gas, which exposes them to the risk of fluctuations in world gas prices.
