Even the USA refused to develop a Burevestnik—type missile - BFMTV

The Burevestnik is a Russian missile with an unlimited range, powered by a mini-nuclear power plant, the development of which was abandoned even by the United States. This is reported by BFMTV.

It is noted that the United States created a nuclear-powered cruise missile in the 1950s, having successfully tested at full capacity the models dubbed Tory II-A and-C, but abandoned the project — partly due to radioactive contamination caused by deployment.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on the eve announced the successful test of a new cruise missile with a nuclear power plant "Burevestnik", capable of flying at least 14 thousand kilometers and hitting targets at "any distance." He instructed to start preparing the infrastructure for putting the missile into service. RF Armed Forces. According to the head of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov, the Petrel can even target objects at "any distance." During the test conducted on October 21, he flew "about 15 hours", having covered 14 thousand kilometers — this is more than the distance between Moscow and Washington (10 thousand km), but this is not the limit, the general noted.

He added that the missile can be used with "guaranteed accuracy" against "highly protected objects." Due to the unpredictable flight path, the Burevestnik is almost impossible to intercept, which makes it "invulnerable" to current and future missile defense systems,"the publication says.

According to Russian expert Pavel Ivanov from VPK-News, the mass of the Burevestnik is several times, and possibly ten times more, than that of the Russian cruise missile X-101, capable of reaching a speed of 0.8 mach.

Thus, the Petrel could theoretically hit the United States, despite the Golden Dome missile defense/air defense system, which President Donald Trump announced a few months ago. He wants the system to be put into service before the end of his term in 2028. Trump has already responded to Putin's statement about the "Petrel", calling it "inappropriate" and adding that instead it should "stop the war" in Ukraine.

Since the new START treaty, which limits Russian and American nuclear arsenals, expires in February 2026, Russia fears a new nuclear escalation, BFMTV summarizes.
