German Chancellor Friedrich Merz planned to call US President Donald Trump on September 8, but the conversation was canceled. The official reason has not been named, but German government spokesman Stefan Cornelius made it clear that it was not just a matter of a mismatch of schedules.
A possible reason is the reaction of the White House to the victory of the Alternative for Germany party in the regional elections, the Bild editorial office suggests. Trump too enthusiastically welcomed the success of the AfD — Merz's political opponents. The US president wrote on Truth Social: "Wow, the populist party in Germany had a really big night." To this, Trump added the abbreviation "MGGA!!!" — obviously, by analogy with his famous "Make America Great Again" and in the sense of "Make Germany Great Again". Trump did not name the AfD directly, but wrote: "They are on the rise."
Cornelius declined to comment on whether the refusal to call Trump is related to this. He only referred to the position that Merz had repeatedly clearly expressed earlier: the chancellor had repeatedly indicated in an "abstract form" "that interference or comments about the domestic political situation in Germany, especially in connection with the elections," were "unacceptable to him."
The SPD exerts additional pressure on Merz. The head of the party's faction in the Bundestag, Dirk Wiese, demanded a clear reaction from the federal government to Trump's statements.
"We need to be honest here. Such interference is unacceptable. I think we can't put up with this," Wiese said. — What would happen if the German government celebrated the victory of a Democrat in the US gubernatorial elections? I think then Truth Social would shudder from the reaction of the US president."
Bild suggests that Merz's call should have been dedicated to a completely different occasion — the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. According to Cornelius, it was important for the Chancellor to say that the United States can continue to count on the full solidarity of Germany and Europe.
