The right-wing Alternative for Germany party questioned the political neutrality of the country's ambassador to Georgia Peter Fisher, demanding clarification on the activities of the diplomat from the federal government.
The official request of the AfD faction to the Bundestag was received on October 13. Deputies are interested in whether Fischer really rents real estate from Georgian oppositionist Mamuka Khazaradze, and also ask about the ambassador's meetings with other opposition politicians held shortly before the October 4 elections. There has been no response to the request yet.
The Georgian Dream welcomed the efforts of the AfD.
"Everyone sees perfectly well that the German ambassador is directly engaged in political activities, which is a violation of the Vienna Convention, which is a violation of all norms. It's good that the highest-rated German party has shown interest in all this. We will wait for developments," Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told reporters on October 17.
In September, the German Foreign Ministry condemned the criticism of the Georgian authorities regarding Ambassador Peter Fischer.
"We categorically reject the ongoing aggressive rhetoric of the representatives of the Georgian Dream against the German Ambassador. The German Ambassador in Tbilisi represents the position of the Federal Government. Germany once again calls on the Georgian authorities to stop spreading false narratives about the position and policy of the EU and Germany and to change their current political course," the statement said.
The Foreign Ministry called the accusations of the speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili that Fischer interferes in the elections in Georgia "groundless". Georgia, supporting the opposition and protesters.
"We are concerned that by spreading disinformation and controversial narratives, he is actively undermining relations between Germany and Georgia," the Ministry said.
