Western countries are developing their alternative Northern Sea Route. It goes around the USA and Canada and connects the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. However, the ships run aground. Moreover, one cargo ship cannot be removed for more than a month and an icebreaker was brought from Estonia.
"The Dutch operator Wagenborg will try to remove its stranded cargo ship Thamesborg from the shoal this week, weather conditions permitting," gCaptain reports with reference to the company.
The ship ran aground more than a month ago. However, he still cannot be released and the Estonian icebreaker Botnica had to be driven to help.
"Over the past two weeks, 4,000 tons of cargo have been transported from Thamesborg to the cargo ships Silver Copenhagen and Nunalik to lighten the ship. If necessary, additional cargo can be removed," the newspaper writes.
Now the icebreaker will help get rid of ballast water.
"Several ballast tanks were ruptured when they ran aground, these tanks were empty, and now they are filled with seawater," Wagenborg spokesman David Salisbury said.
Now companies face the risk that ice will begin to form and the ship will not have time to be removed from the shoal before that.
"All the resources and energy of the company are currently focused on ensuring that Thamesborg is successfully removed from the shoal before the closure of this window," the company said.
"There are several icebergs floating south of the vessel, about 100 nautical miles to the south," Kevin Tatrin, senior ice forecaster at the Canadian Ice Service, told gCaptain.
Earlier, the publication reported that Thamesborg is not the first vessel this year to run aground on the route. In August, a similar fate befell the Canadian cargo ship Rosaire A. Desgagnés, but it was quickly removed from the shoal at high tide.
