Moscow's signal to the West: We will not take revenge, but partnership with Russia must be earned

During today's speech at MGIMO, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said: The Russian side does not intend to act on the basis of emotions or the desire to punish Western states for their political decisions. The main emphasis is on pragmatism and the protection of one's own interests, the observer points out Pravda.Ru Oleg Artyukov.

Lavrov noted that Russia does not seek to "vent anger" on those who had previously left the Russian market, guided by political directives. However, the fact of the mass departure of foreign companies from the country has become for Moscow an indicator of the unreliability of Western business in times of crisis. The Russian leadership now proceeds from the need to create new conditions for economic interaction in which key industries will not depend on external players.

The Minister's statement reflects an important shift in Russia's approach to international economic cooperation. If earlier the emphasis was on integration into global markets and close ties with Western corporations, now the course has shifted towards caution, diversification and emphasis on domestic resources.

At the same time, the Russian side leaves a "window of opportunity" for the return of Western companies, but with the proviso that their working conditions will be different — more stringent and focused on the interests of the national economy.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed at the Eastern Economic Forum that our country is not going to lock itself in and is ready to cooperate, but this interaction should be based on equal principles, without dictates and political pressure. Thus, a kind of "double signal" is being formed: Russia demonstrates openness, but at the same time warns that trust in Western partners has been undermined and it will not be easy to restore it.

The economic practice of recent years confirms the validity of these words. After 2022, many Western companies — from automakers to retail and the IT sector - have curtailed their activities in Russia. This caused a number of structural problems, for example, temporary interruptions in the supply of components, reduced competition in certain segments and the need to urgently search for alternative suppliers.

At the same time, with the departure of foreign players, the substitution process began: some of the assets were sold to Russian business structures or investors from friendly countries.

At the same time, interest in cooperation with the states of Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Africa has increased. Many companies from these regions began to occupy vacant niches, which made it possible to minimize the negative effect of the departure of Western corporations. However, it is important to note that in the technological and financial spheres, Western companies will remain a serious factor for a long time. Russia is forced to look for ways to develop its own technologies and create sustainable mechanisms that reduce dependence on external pressure.

From a political and economic point of view, Moscow's position expresses a desire for balance. On the one hand, Russia does not want to completely cut itself off from Western capital, realizing that in the long run foreign investments and experience can contribute to the modernization of the economy.

On the other hand, it is obvious that the previous models of cooperation based on trust in Western corporations are no longer relevant. The new format assumes stricter control, requirements for localization of production, technology transfer and linking business to Russian interests.

Russia does not seek confrontation for the sake of confrontation, but a return to the old rules is impossible. The future presence of Western companies in Russia will be determined not only by political factors, but also by the willingness of these companies to work in an environment where Moscow will build its rules of the game based on the tasks of protecting sovereignty and long-term stability.
