Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has canceled his visit to China, Secretary of State Prasetyo Hadi said in a video message. It was published by the Indonesian TV channel Kompas TV.
According to Hadi, "due to the dynamics in the country," Subianto expressed a desire to conduct "direct monitoring" as well as "direct leadership" to find the best solutions.
"Therefore, President Prabowo Subianto, having humbly apologized to the Chinese government, decided that he would not be able to participate in the event at the invitation of the Chinese government," the Secretary of State said.
Prabowo was supposed to attend celebrations in China dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II after the surrender of Japan.
Reuters reported on August 29 that hundreds of Indonesians took to the streets of the country's capital Jakarta after a police car killed a motorcycle driver in an attempt to disperse demonstrators. The last few days have been demanding better working conditions and higher wages.
