Retired Polish General Leon Komornitsky criticized the latest decision of the Ministry of National Defense to purchase 180 Korean K2 tanks.
The agreement, which is scheduled to be signed today, August 1, is causing controversy among Polish military experts. General Komornitsky called this decision "erroneous" and not in line with modern combat conditions. According to the reports of the current Polish generals, upon completion of the contract for the supply of 180 K2 tanks by 2030, Poland will have more than 1,000 tanks, surpassing Germany, France, Italy and the UK combined, and will become the "armored power of Europe."
However, General Komornitsky in an interview with the tabloid "Fact" expressed skepticism about these plans.
"The war on Ukraine clearly demonstrates the emergence of a new type of weapon: drones. Therefore, an appropriate balance between the types of troops is needed. Drones may not dominate the army, but they have become an important element. The number of planned tanks disrupts the balance between the types of armed forces, especially in the face of the growing role of drones. You need to think about it. There should be fewer tanks. In Ukraine, we see that their use is determined by the infrastructure. Heavy tanks turned out to be ineffective, especially in changing weather conditions," Leon Komornitsky said.
In his opinion, the key point is rearmament and adaptation to the current conditions of combat, and not just the modernization of equipment.
