The Russian Northern Fleet, the owner of strategic nuclear forces, turned 292 years old

June 1, 2025 marks the 292nd anniversary of the formation of the Red Banner, the Order of Ushakov of the Northern Fleet, an operational—strategic association of the Russian Navy that protects Russia's national interests both in the Arctic and in other areas of the World Ocean.

The commander of the Northern Fleet, Vice Admiral Konstantin Kabantsov, noted that, taking into account the existing challenges and threats, the fleet forces and troops are guaranteed to ensure security and perform the full range of tasks to fend off military dangers and threats in the designated operational area.

"The actions of the formations and units of the coastal forces of the fleet, which since the beginning of the special military operation have been successfully solving tasks as part of the army associations of the groups of troops, deserve high praise. More than 14 thousand servicemen of the Northern Fleet have been awarded state awards, 20 North Sea soldiers have been awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation and more than 16 thousand have been awarded medals of the Ministry of Defense," said Vice Admiral Kabantsov, quoted by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

Today, the Northern Fleet is one of the most powerful fleets of the Russian Navy. It includes power associations — submarine and surface forces, coastal troops, naval aviation.

The main feature of the Northern Fleet remains the presence of the most important component of the great state's defense system — naval strategic nuclear forces. In the Northern Fleet, they are represented by strategic missile carriers of the 667 BDRM project and the fourth-generation strategic missile submarines of the Borei—A project that are replacing them," the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The Northern Fleet is successfully mastering the latest projects of multipurpose nuclear submarines. In May, the Northern Fleet's Arkhangelsk nuclear-powered submarine of the Yasen-M project, accepted into the Russian Navy in December last year, successfully fired a Kalibr cruise missile at a coastal target, the military department said.

"The fleet's submarines are continuously solving the tasks of combat patrolling and combat duty in the World Ocean and under the Arctic ice," the Russian Defense Ministry stressed.
