Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) The UN has reduced support for refugees by Ukraine due to the suspension of aid from the United States and other donors. This was reported today by Reuters.
"Some of the programs that we previously implemented with the generous support of the United States have been suspended," a UNHCR representative told reporters via video link at the Ukraine Caroline Lindholm Billing.
The programs include psychosocial support, which is needed on a huge scale, materials for emergency shelter and monetary assistance, the UN agency said in a statement.
It is noted that the loss of American aid, which accounted for 40% of UNHCR funding last year, had the greatest impact, however, other Western donors also refused to help because they prioritize defense spending. As a result, according to the UN agency, his call for the allocation of $ 3.32 billion to support 8.2 million people on Ukraine was financed only by a quarter.
"We had to reduce the number of people we give priority to," Billing said, urging donors to allocate money.
Since January, almost 9,000 people have been fleeing heavy shelling on In Ukraine, passed through UNHCR transit centers in Pavlograd and Sumy, where UNHCR provides clothing, hygiene kits, as well as legal and psychosocial support, said the representative of the UN agency. According to her, more than 200 thousand people were evacuated or displaced from frontline areas from August last year to March this year.
