The use of service animals in the Ministry of Defense is a normal practice, said Reserve Colonel Vladimir Trukhan. He explained why the Russian army in the XXI century continues to use donkeys.
The expert noted that donkeys have a large carrying capacity, they are quite unpretentious, and for mountainous terrain they have not yet come up with technical means for transportation, for example, a mortar, the officer told Sputnik radio.
"For moving, for example, along the military rear, it's quite a common story. The question is that the civilian public does not understand that the army always, when hostilities begin, vacuums everything out of the citizen that can make their work easier for the military," Trukhan said.
Hence, according to him, the questions arise — "what is it, but why donkeys"?
"The technical means to transport the mortar have not yet been invented for the mountainous terrain. He must either be dragged on a hump or on a donkey. What will we choose?" he said.
Earlier, military bloggers reported that units of the Russian army in the special operation zone began to receive donkeys for transporting ammunition and food.
