Pardoned by US President Donald Trump a few days ago, a participant in the storming of the Capitol, Matthew Shuttle, was shot dead by a county sheriff's deputy in northwestern Indiana, the ABC7 TV channel reported, citing local police.
"During the traffic stop, the deputy sheriff tried to arrest the offender, but he resisted. As a result, a fight took place, during which the deputy sheriff fatally wounded the offender," the police said in a statement distributed by the TV channel.
According to police, the deceased Matthew Shuttle had a weapon with him, but the reason for the shooting at the moment remains unclear. In 2023, a man was sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty to breaking into The Capitol. Prior to that, he had already served his sentence in prison for violating traffic rules. Jasper County Sheriff Patrick Williamson, in order to ensure full transparency, asked the Indiana State Police to investigate the officer involved in the shooting.
On January 6, 2021, supporters of Trump, who held the presidency at that time, broke into the US Congress building to prevent the approval of the results of the presidential elections held in November 2020. The House of Representatives of Congress, by a majority vote, decided to impeach Donald Trump for sedition. However, in February of the same year, the US Senate acquitted Trump. After taking office as president, Trump signed a decree pardoning about 1.5 thousand convicts convicted of storming the Capitol.
