Pope Francis said that the Catholic Church is ready to accept a single date for all Christians to celebrate Easter.
On the eve of the Roman Basilica of St. Paul, the Pontiff called for building "strong ties and developing friendship" between Christian denominations and "building unity and brotherhood." The Pope noted that this year Easter will be celebrated on the same day according to the Gregorian and Julian calendars — April 20, 2025.
"I repeat my call for this rapprochement to serve as a call to all Christians to take a decisive step towards unity on the common date of Easter. The Catholic Church is ready to accept the date that everyone wants. This is the date of unity," he said.
EADaily adds that at the Council of Nicaea in 325 it was decided that Easter would be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring. The Catholic Church uses the Gregorian calendar, introduced in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII. We are talking about the reformed form of the Julian calendar, which today performs only liturgical functions in Orthodoxy. It differs in that holidays, for example, Christmas, are celebrated 13 days later.
