In the Kaliningrad region, defenders of the former Nazi aviation hangars, from which torpedo bombers took off during the Great Patriotic War, striking Soviet ships, have become more active again.
Defenders of the German rusty reinforced concrete structures on the Baltic Spit appealed to the governor of the Kaliningrad region Alexei Besprozvannykh with a request to begin restoring Luftwaffe facilities. The head of the administration of the Baltic District, Sergei Melnikov, said at an off-site meeting of the government:
"Are we going to keep the German military base or what are we going to do with it? If you save it, it's hundreds of millions of rubles."
Melnikov asked the governor to raise this issue at the town planning council.
Earlier, EADaily reported that after the victory over Germany, the hangars became a trophy of the Baltic Fleet (here, in particular, Soviet amphibious aircraft B-6 and B-12 were repaired). However, for more than 20 years the buildings have not been used by the Russian Ministry of Defense, as they have lost their relevance in military-technical terms. Currently, abandoned and emergency structures are privately owned by former State Duma deputy Asanbuba Nyudurbegov, who partially dismantled this junk. Five years ago, defenders of pseudo-historical heritage even held an unauthorized picket.
