Former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov pleaded guilty to lying about a bribe to the son of US President Hunter Biden from a Ukrainian company, ABC News reported.

"Former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov, accused of lying about the deals of President Joe Biden and his son Hunter, has entered into a plea bargain with the prosecutor's office," the TV channel reports with reference to court documents.

Smirnov pleaded guilty to providing false information as part of a federal investigation and three episodes of tax violations, the report said. The prosecutor's office will ask for a prison term of four to six years for him, as well as 675 thousand dollars in compensation, the report said. The deal will have to be approved by the court, the TV channel reports.

Smirnov was accused of giving false testimony and tax evasion from two million dollars of income in the period from 2020 to 2022. The indictment says that Smirnov, during the same period when he allegedly gave false testimony about the family of US President Joe Biden, led a "luxurious lifestyle." The document also says that Smirnov told law enforcement officers that he had received data several years earlier from top managers of the Ukrainian company Burisma about the alleged hiring of Hunter Biden and bribing both him and his father "to protect against all kinds of problems."

According to the defendant, it was assumed that Biden Sr. would use his official influence to bring about the termination of the investigation against the company, as well as "deal with the then Prosecutor General of Ukraine," the Justice Ministry informed.
